Alter Servers

Being an altar server is an excellent way for our young people to become more connected with our faith and to serve the priest and entire congregation.  If your child is interested, please talk with Father Paschal .

Lectors

Background
Lectors are special liturgical ministers whose principal duty is to serve the community by proclaiming the readings from Scripture during liturgies such as the Liturgy of the Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours and on other special occasions when the readings from the Scriptures are included.

The documents of the Second Vatican Council remind us that “in the readings, explained by the homily, God is speaking to his people, opening them up to the mystery of redemption and salvation, and nourishing their spirit; Christ is present to the faithful through his own word.” God is, as it were, using the voices of ministers so that his people may hear Him. A thoughtful and prayerful presentation opens the hearts of the community so that the Holy Spirit may speak to each one, enlightening, comforting or challenging them.

Who Can Serve
Any adult may participate in this ministry according to established guidelines and after proper training.

Ministers serve at the regularly scheduled Sunday and weekday Masses as well as being called upon to serve for other special liturgies and events involving Scripture readings.

Extraordinary Ministers

Extraordinary Ministers of Communion (EMC), as “extraordinary” ministers of Communion, assist priests and deacons with the distribution of Holy Communion at Mass and to the sick and homebound in their places of residence. Whether at Mass or in other special situations, the minister enables the recipient to share more deeply in the Body of Christ and experience the great love of the Triune God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

History
This ministry arises from the reforms of the liturgy established by the Second Vatican Council. In 1973, Pope Paul VI promulgated the document known as Immensae Caritatis (“Immense Love”) that fostered greater participation by the faithful in sacramental Communion. The Holy Father wrote:
Present-day conditions demand that greater access to Holy Communion should be made possible so that the faithful, by sharing more fully in the fruits of the sacrifice of the Mass, might dedicate themselves more readily and effectively to God, and to the good of the Church.…
Therefore, in order that the faithful… may share in the Sacred Banquet and not be deprived of this sacramental help and consolation, it has seemed appropriate to the Holy Father to establish Extraordinary Ministers.

The ministers perform this liturgical function to assist the priest and deacon who are the ordinary ministers of Communion. As Pope Paul VI noted, they perform this ministry to enable the assembly to participate fully in the sharing of the Body and Blood of Jesus.

Who Can Serve
This ministry is open to all persons who have received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist and who meet the requirements of the parish and the Diocese of Pensacola/Tallahassee. After appropriate training, the rector formally commissions those qualified as "extraordinary" ministers of Communion. Consider serving Christ and your church community by distributing Holy Communion at the  Mass that you regularly attend on Sunday.  We invite and welcome all who would like to be trained to serve in this way to contact us.

Ushers

  • The primary duty of the ushers is to make the members of the congregation feel welcome and to assist during Mass as needed.Ushers should always arrive to Mass early and be ready to serve even if not scheduled.  Emergencies happen!
  • Ushers can help organize the altar/altar servers, the Eucharistic Ministers, and the lectors.  Ushers generally help ensure that there are enough people in place to make Mass go smoothly that Sunday.
  •  Ushers help seat people when they arrive.  If there is overcrowding, ushers help find seats or provide additional seating.  They also help those who have special seating needs.
  • Ushers take up the collection and bring the gifts or find people to bring the gifts (bread, wine, offering)
  • During Communion, ushers assist with orderly procession forward and also help those with special needs by helping the priest or Eucharistic Minister locate people to whom the Eucharist needs to be brought.
  • Ushers distribute bulletins after Mass and provide other information as needed.
  • Any adult member can become an usher by making his/her intention known to the usher leader (Dan Darity-- that's him in the picture above -- the only man shown!).  Presently, we are blessed to have some members interested and awaiting their turn at training.
